DOT Sleep Apnea
As it stands right now, the DOT (Department of Transportation) physical exam is required for all commercial drivers. This entails a brief questioning on sleep apnea, but no screening is required at this time. So if commercial drivers say they aren’t suffering from the symptoms they get a healthy grade on the examination. Now we have drivers on the road who may be suffering from the disorder, but because the DOT doesn’t currently screen for sleep apnea, they are licensed and eligible to go. We’d like to see this change.
If you have drivers we urge you not to allow the current standards held by the DOT be your standards for diagnosing sleep apnea. Drivers who suffer from sleep apnea are six times more likely to be involved in accident. And if you’re looking at the bottom dollar, if the DOT would step up the screening of sleep apnea, an estimated $11.1 billion in damages would be saved each year. Just think on how much money would that would save your company. The good thing is you don’t have to wait on the DOT to regulate sleep apnea -- we are here for you now.
If you have commercial drivers running the roads for you, there is a good chance that a good number of them may be suffering from sleep apnea. Symptoms include daytime sleepiness, restless leg, snoring and the inability to breathe at night. And although the DOT recognizes that sleep apnea causes a reduction of reaction time and puts your commercial drivers and anyone else on the road in danger, they have yet to regulate it properly. But with the safety of your drivers at stake, why wait?
